Michigan Opens its Bad Bank School System, year 2 Students in Michigan’s statewide turnaround school district returned to classes Wednesday at 15 buildings across Detroit.

The Education Achievement Authority, created in 2011 to take over Michigan’s worst performing school districts, began its second year of operation at six high schools and nine elementary-middle schools — all in Detroit.
District officials estimate about 9,000 students will return to the EAA, which has a longer school day and longer academic year than most Michigan schools. It also uses a student-centered model and creates individual learning plans so children can learn at their educational level, regardless of age or grade. There goes New Jersey After years of debate, a new statewide evaluation system will for the first time measure teachers by their own and their students’ performances. The change comes at the same time that new national curriculum standards continue to make their way into New Jersey’s classrooms and to reshape the state’s approach to testing. Add the ongoing financial pressures on schools and the range of new and revised government mandates. And that doesn’t even include the special pressures on the state’s most troubled districts – including Camden, the latest district to come under state control. How big a difference will the new teacher-evaluation system make in this first year? It’s been talked about since the new teacher tenure law was enacted in the summer of 2012 – the day that every school district would need to have in place a system to annually grade teachers on a four-point scale from “ineffective” to “highly effective.” Ready or not, that day is here.

With Democratic California Right Behind In a major shift in how California’s 6.2 million public school students are taught and tested, state officials plan to drop the standardized exams used since 1999 and replace them with a computerized system next spring.

The move would advance new learning goals, called the Common Core, which are less focused on memorizing facts. They are designed instead to develop critical thinking and writing skills that take formerly separate subjects — such as English and history or writing and chemistry — and link them. Forty-five states have adopted these standards.

California is moving up its timetable for the new computerized tests by a year, leaving some school districts scrambling to prepare.

Schools must have enough computers available on each campus to handle the testing, for example. Until now, state standardized tests were conducted entirely with pencil and paper.

The new exams also would upend plans in the Los Angeles Unified School District to use student test scores to evaluate teachers. Corruption Runs Rampant in Capital’s Schools L.A. County prosecutors have charged 13 employees in four of the region’s most financially strapped school districts with stealing thousands of textbooks for a book buyer, who allegedly paid them $200,000 in bribes.

A 37-page indictment unsealed Thursday tells of a book-selling scheme in which book buyer Corey Frederick recruited two librarians, a campus supervisor and a former warehouse manager, among others, to allegedly steal thousands of books from schools in Los Angeles, Inglewood and Bellflower.

Obamagogue: That’s Not My Red Line Around My Neck, It belongs to the World! President Barack Obama said Wednesday that he didn’t set the “red line” against Syria for the use of chemical weapons.
Speaking at a press conference in Stockholm ahead of an economic summit in Russia, where he will seek support for a U.S. military strike against Syria, Obama said the “red line” he talked about a year ago against Syria’s use of chemical weapons wasn’t his but an international standard.

“I didn’t set a red line, the world set a red line,” Obama said. “My credibility is not on the line. The international community’s credibility is on the line. And America and Congress’ credibility is on the line because we give lip service to the notion that these international norms are important.”

At an August 2012 White House press conference, Obama warned that “we have been very clear to the Assad regime, but also to other players on the ground, that a red line for us is we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized. That would change my calculus. That would change my equation.”

WTF! Pentagon doesn’t want war???? (but they will dutifully fight it) After personal exchanges with dozens of active and retired soldiers in recent days, I feel confident that what follows represents the overwhelming opinion of serving professionals who have been intimate witnesses to the unfolding events that will lead the United States into its next war.  They are embarrassed to be associated with the amateurism of the Obama administration’s attempts to craft a plan that makes strategic sense. None of the White House staff has any experience in war or understands it. What Powerful People Will Back Obmagogue’s War on Syria? It’s going to take a lot of backroom deals and lobbying to convince Representatives to go against the will of the American public, overwhelmingly opposed to the war, just a year ahead of the elections, but that lobbying may be coming.

AIPAC and its usual auxiliaries in the Israel Lobby are looking to turn the tide toward war, promising to “go all-out” next week in lobbying Congress to support the war, along with a “major mobilization” of US Jewish leaders.

The Israel Lobby’s uncanny knack for getting its way in the US Congress is almost legendary, and if there’s one group that rivals them in influence, it’s defense industry PACs. They haven’t been publicly pro-war, but their beneficiaries have been, and with military contractors seeing their stock prices surge on talk of war, it’s not hard to imagine why.

Conspicuously not on board for the war, however, are the American voting public, whose opinion is at the fore with elections coming next year, along with US military leadership, which has made its displeasure surprisingly public in the lead-up to war.

49 Million Americans Don’t know where their next meal is Some 17.6 million U.S. households had trouble feeding their family members at times last year as “food insecurity” remained at near-record levels for the fifth straight year, according to a government report released Wednesday.

More than one-third of these households – 7 million – suffered from “very low food security,” in which usual eating patterns were disrupted and consumption was reduced because of a lack of money and access to food.
In all, 49 million Americans didn’t know where their next meals would come from at some point in 2012, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported.

The DEA is Watching you More than the NSA For at least six years, law enforcement officials working on a counternarcotics program have had routine access, using subpoenas, to an enormous AT&T database that contains the records of decades of Americans’ phone calls — parallel to but covering a far longer time than the National Security Agency’s hotly disputed collection of phone call logs.  The Hemisphere Project, a partnership between federal and local drug officials and AT&T that has not previously been reported, involves an extremely close association between the government and the telecommunications giant.

The government pays AT&T to place its employees in drug-fighting units around the country. San Diego Catholic Church School Fires Teacher for being abused A former teacher who lost her job after her estranged husband, who she said was abusive, showed up at school prompting a lockdown filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego.

The lawsuit filed by 40-year-old Carie Charlesworth alleges that the diocese violated its own principles and teachings when she was fired. It is the latest turn in a case that has received national attention and fueled a bill now pending in the state Legislature that would protect victims of domestic abuse from losing their jobs.

William Glasser Glasser was not a typical psychiatrist. He did not prescribe psychiatric drugs to patients, did not dwell on their past behaviors or subconscious thoughts, and largely ignored the standard diagnoses of mental disorders adopted by his profession. At the risk of sounding like a simpleton, which fit some critics’ views of him, he often said there was only one problem that sent people into therapy. “They are unhappy,” he said.

In his 1965 book “Reality Therapy,” he said unhappiness usually stems from a person’s inability to fulfill two basic needs: “the need to love and be loved, and the need to feel that we are worthwhile to ourselves and to others.” Glasser counseled patients to take responsibility for fulfilling those needs in a positive manner and believed even schizophrenics and manic depressives could benefit from his approach.
