Under Democratic mayor Adrian Fenty, she repeatedly clashed with the Washington Teachers&#8217; Union, which she said put the interests of adults over those of children. &#8220;Cooperation, collaboration, and consensus-building are way overrated,&#8221; Rhee said at the Aspen Institute&#8217;s education summit in 2008. She told journalist John Merrow it is imperative that teachers-union bargaining rights exclude issues such as devising a fair teacher-evaluation system.<br \/>\nSince resigning as chancellor last year, Rhee has launched a new organization, StudentsFirst, with the express goal of raising $1 billion to counter teachers unions. Her approach remains confrontational. In a profound sense, Democrats like Michelle Rhee have paved the way for Scott Walker.<br \/>\nBut Rhee couldn&#8217;t have done it alone. Then-candidate Barack Obama endorsed Rhee in a 2008 debate as a &#8220;wonderful new superintendent&#8221; and later applauded the firing of every single unionized teacher at Central Falls High School in Rhode Island. \u00a0http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2011\/02\/25\/AR2011022506611.html?wprss=rss_print\/outlook<\/p>\n<p><strong>Corruption Endemic in Capitalist Schools <\/strong> Sweetwater school board member Arlie Ricasa, who has pleaded not guilty to eight felony corruption charges, returned to work this week as an administrator at Southwestern College.<br \/>\nRicasa, 48, was placed on paid leave by the college after the charges came down in January. She was director of student development and health services.<br \/>\nSouthwestern spokeswoman Lillian Leopold said Ricasa is now director of extended opportunity programs and services. The college board discussed Ricasa\u2019s fate on May 23, and then Superintendent Melinda Nish approved the return to work.<br \/>\nBoard President Norma Hernandez could not be reached, and former board President Tim Nader said he could not comment.\u201cI can\u2019t speak publicly about closed session personnel actions,\u201d Nader said.<br \/>\nRicasa\u2019s $124,668 salary remains unchanged. In the five months she was off duty, she was paid about $51,000. \u00a0http:\/\/www.utsandiego.com\/news\/2012\/jun\/06\/sweetwater-defendant-back-work\/<\/p>\n<p><strong>More than One Million $ Spent on Revamps of CSU Prezzie Homes <\/strong>More than $1 million in public and private funds have been spent over the last year or so to renovate university residences of several new California State University presidents, improvements officials say are necessary as the pressure on campus leaders to raise funds becomes more acute.<br \/>\nRepairs to many of the homes had been delayed for years and the transition to new campus leaders provided a natural window to conduct the remodels, Cal State officials said. &#8230;Tuition has increased for several years running; classes have been cut, delaying students&#8217; graduations; and the system is wait-listing all applicants for the fall 2013 term.<br \/>\nThe California Faculty Assn. calculated that money spent on renovations could pay for 153 one-year scholarships for students or 183 additional classes, among other uses. Desperate to cobble a pro-war cautionary tale out of a blood-soaked tragedy, we keep reimagining the loss in Southeast Asia not as a policy failure but as the product of an America that dishonored returning troops.<br \/>\nIncessantly echoed by Hollywood and Washington since the concurrent successes of the Rambo and Reagan franchises, this legend was the central theme of President Obama\u2019s Memorial Day speech kicking off the government\u2019s commemoration of the Vietnam conflict.<br \/>\n\u201cYou were often blamed for a war you didn\u2019t start, when you should have been commended for serving your country with valor,\u201d he told veterans. \u201cYou came home and sometimes were denigrated, when you should have been celebrated. It was a national shame, a disgrace that should have never happened.\u201d<br \/>\nIt\u2019s undeniable that chronic underfunding of the Veterans Administration unduly harmed Vietnam-era soldiers. However, that lamentable failure was not what Obama was referring to. As the president who escalated the Vietnam-esque war in Afghanistan, he was making a larger argument. Deliberately parroting Rambo\u2019s claim about \u201ca quiet war against all the soldiers returning,\u201d he was asserting that America, as a whole, spat on soldiers when they came home \u2014 even though there\u2019s no proof that this happened on any mass scale.<br \/>\nIn his exhaustive book titled \u201cThe Spitting Image,\u201d Vietnam vet and Holy Cross professor Jerry Lembcke documents veterans who claim they were spat on by antiwar protestors, but he found no physical evidence (photographs, news reports, etc.) that these transgressions actually occurred. His findings are supported by surveys of his fellow Vietnam veterans as they came home. \u00a0.. Spain&#8211;<\/strong>Finance ministers of countries that use the common European currency on Saturday offered Spain a lifeline of up to 100 billion euros to stabilize its banks.<br \/>\nSpain announced after a three-hour video conference call that it would become the fourth and largest nation to request assistance, but officials did not specify the size of the assistance fund.<br \/>\nFinance ministers from the 17 nations that use the euro later issued a statement saying Spain&#8217;s formal request would come &#8220;shortly,&#8221; and that up to 100 billion euros, $125 billion at the current exchange rate, would be provided from Europe&#8217;s rescue funds.<br \/>\nSpanish Economy Minister Luis De Guindos did not indicate how much of that Spain would accept.
