Now, it is back to the bargaining table for Orange County teachers and the school board.<\/p>\n<p>Next <span class=\"vm-hook-outer vm-hook-default vm-hook-inview\"><span class=\"vm-hook\">year<\/span><\/span>, the Department of Education predicts there will be 10,000 vacant teacher positions across the state.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We might not have that many vacancies. But one is one too many,&#8221; said Wendy Doromal, president of the <span class=\"vm-hook-outer vm-hook-default\"><span class=\"vm-hook\">teacher<\/span><\/span> union.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>With 79 percent of the vote, teachers voted &#8216;no&#8217;<\/strong> <\/em>on the latest proposed contract that would have given teachers set raises.<\/p>\n<p>But some teachers say the contract included hikes in health insurance costs and that would have canceled out the raise and even left some <span class=\"vm-hook-outer vm-hook-default\"><span class=\"vm-hook\">employees<\/span><\/span> with less money than they made last year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Teachers are nickled and dimed,&#8221; said Doromal. &#8220;It&#8217;s not just that they have low wages. They&#8217;re expected to work for free. (WYMT) &#8211; <\/strong><\/span> <b>3:15 p.m. Tuesday<\/b><br \/>\nPeople and organizations continued to stop by a railroad track in Cumberland Tuesday, bringing food and water to protesting miners. The miners have prevented a train hauling coal from the Cloverlick #3 mine for more than 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>One group among the endless stream of supporters came from JonEvan Jack&#8217;s in Corbin. They rolled their mobile kitchen to Harlan to feed the miners free of charge.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I just seen these people and they need help. I know what it&#8217;s like to go without a paycheck,&#8221; said owner Nathan Brown. &#8220;I think they already know their community supports them. I seen a lot of people dropping off water and stuff and I think that&#8217;s really cool.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Community members indicated that they will continue to help each other out as long as the miners are left in the dark.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My family has mined these mines as long as I can remember, so the pride we have in each other when we&#8217;re in need in Eastern Kentucky. The legislatively mandated guide is a resource for teachers who want to instruct their students in the field of \u201cethnic studies,\u201d and was written by an advisory board of teachers, academics and bureaucrats.\u00a0<em>It\u2019s as bad as you can imagine.<\/em><\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><strong><em>Ethnic studies is described in the document as \u201cthe interdisciplinary study of race, ethnicity, and indigeneity with an emphasis on experiences of people of color in the United States.\u201d But that\u2019s not all it is. \u201cIt is the study of intersectional and ancestral roots, coloniality, hegemony, and a dignified world where many worlds fit, for present and future generations.\u201d It is the \u201cxdisciplinary [sic], loving, and critical praxis of holistic humanity.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The document is filled with fashionable academic jargon like \u201cpositionalities,\u201d \u201chybridities,\u201d \u201cnepantlas\u201d and \u201cmisogynoir.\u201d It includes faddish social-science lingo like \u201ccis-heteropatriarchy\u201d that may make sense to radical university professors and activists but doesn\u2019t mean much to the regular folks who send their children to California\u2019s public schools. a dangerous surge of muddy, debris-filled water so overwhelming it appears only once a century.<\/p>\n<p>In our political world, we are now seeing a 100-year flood of toxic debris. The sludge washing ashore includes President Trump\u2019s continuing cries of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=432946314109592\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fake news<\/a>!\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/04\/26\/us\/politics\/trump-schedule-leakers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">traitors<\/a>\u201d; his rage at immigrants and refugees; his touting of an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/trump-invasion-border-dhs-one-percent-honduras-guatemala\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">invasion<\/a>\u201d at the southern border; and his recent round of attacks on \u201cthe squad,\u201d four young congresswomen of color who, he raged, should \u201cgo back\u201d to the \u201ctotally broken and crime infested places from which they came.\u201d (Three of them, of course, were born in the United States.) When he talked about the fourth, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, a legal immigrant from Somalia, the inflamed crowd at his July 17th reelection rally in North Carolina began spontaneously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2019\/07\/17\/742896827\/trump-attacks-congresswomen-at-n-c-rally-as-crowd-chants-send-her-back\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chanting<\/a>, \u201cSend her back! Send her back! Send her back!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>Donald Trump, of course, has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/07\/20\/us\/politics\/trump-race-record.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">long history<\/a> of disliking people of color, going back to the days when he and his father tried to keep them out of their New York real estate dynasty\u2019s apartment buildings. Presidents, however, usually find it politic to keep such feelings under wraps. Nonetheless, Trump\u2019s particular brand of xenophobia, racism, and media hatred isn\u2019t completely unprecedented. The massages often ended with Epstein groping or sexually assaulting the girls.<\/p>\n<p>Epstein\u2019s victims attended several Palm Beach County schools, including Lake Worth Middle and Palm Beach Gardens High.<\/p>\n<p>But Royal Palm Beach High, with about 3,000 students, many from the county\u2019s rural reaches, was ground zero.<\/p>\n<p>Evidence suggests Epstein knew his victims were school girls and the signs didn\u2019t escape Royal Palm Beach High administrators. Paley was Lab\u2019s most prominent example of teachers who contribute to academic scholarship in the area of education.<\/p>\n<p>In 1989 Paley <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macfound.org\/fellows\/372\/\">received a prestigious MacArthur Fellowship<\/a> in recognition of\u00a0her special contributions to education, which included developing a \u201cstory playing\u201d technique that helps teachers understand how children\u2019s natural interest in fantasy can be used to help them learn. Stories, which students can tell or act out, play a central role in children\u2019s growth, she contended.
