They have helped pioneer a mega-giving strategy called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/search.proquest.com\/openview\/15c7505e9ad03283ce3e06436bc71419\/1?pq-origsite=gscholar&amp;cbl=18750&amp;diss=y\">advocacy philanthropy<\/a>,\u201d which aims to use private donations to shift how governments structure their activities and use taxpayer dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2009, the Gates Foundation\u2019s primary U.S. activity has focused on establishing and implementing Common Core, a set of centrally mandated curriculum rules and tests for what children are to learn in each K-12 grade, with the results linked to school and teacher ratings and punitive measures for low performers. The Gates Foundation has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/16U6R49ojgBYvCtxvhdfiEqfcOskqeaCVq6IoqSeFWUY\/edit?usp=sharing\">spent more than $400 million itself<\/a>\u00a0and influenced <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/big-government\/2017\/10\/21\/common-core-backer-bill-gates-announces-plan-invest-1-7-billion-public-education\/\">$4 <em>trillion<\/em> in U.S. taxpayer funds<\/a> towards this goal. Eight years later, however, Bill Gates is admitting failure on that project, and a \u201cpivot\u201d to another that is not likely to go any better.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased on everything we have learned in the past 17 years, we are evolving our education strategy,\u201d Gates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gatesnotes.com\/Education\/Council-of-Great-City-Schools?WT.mc_id=10_19_2017_10_CGCS2017_GF-TW_&amp;WT.tsrc=GFTW&amp;sf66013815=1\">wrote on his blog<\/a> as a preface to a speech he gave last week in Cleveland. He followed this by detailing how U.S. education has essentially made little improvement in the years since he and his foundation \u2014 working so closely with the Obama administration that federal officials regularly consulted foundation employees and waived ethics laws to hire several \u2014 began redirecting trillions of public dollars towards programs he now admits haven\u2019t accomplished much.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there is one thing I have learned,\u201d Gates says in concluding his speech, \u201cit is that no matter how enthusiastic we might be about one approach or another, the decision to go from pilot to wide-scale usage is ultimately and always something that has to be decided by you and others the field.\u201d If this statement encompasses his Common Core debacle, Gates could have at least the humility to recall that Common Core had <em>no pilot<\/em> before he took it national. There wasn\u2019t even a draft available to the public before the Obama administration hooked states into contracts, many of which were ghostwritten with Gates funds, pledging they\u2019d buy that pig in a poke.<\/p>\n<p>But it looks like this is as close to an apology or admission of failure as we\u2019re going to get, folks. Sorry about that $4 trillion and mangled years of education for American K-12 kids and teachers. Aiding him in this undertaking is Harvard University, which gifted Spicer with a fellowship from its Kennedy School of Government for the fall semester. (Perhaps concerned that one Trump propagandist wouldn\u2019t cut it, <em><strong>Harvard also recruited former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, while Chelsea Manning, incredibly,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/09\/14\/us\/chelsea-manning-harvard-fellow-cia.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-reactid=\"105\">was disinvited<\/a>.)<\/strong><\/em> According to a press release, Spicer is a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hks.harvard.edu\/announcements\/institute-politics-harvard-kennedy-school-announces-additional-visiting-fellows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-reactid=\"107\">distinguished veteran of public life<\/a>\u201d selected to \u201cfulfill the Institute&#8217;s mission of engaging students in discourse on topical issues of today.\u201d The announcement did not mention whether he\u2019ll be instructing young scholars on the art lying through your teeth about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/blogs\/donald-trump-administration\/2017\/01\/spicer-trump-voter-fraud-claim-234121\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-reactid=\"109\">nonexistent voter fraud<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/sean-spicer-berates-media-over-inauguration-crowd-size-coverage-2017-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-reactid=\"111\">inauguration crowd sizes<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/post-politics\/wp\/2017\/04\/11\/spicer-hitler-didnt-even-sink-to-using-chemical-weapons-although-he-sent-jews-to-the-holocaust-center\/?utm_term=.655af81efa4f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-reactid=\"113\">Hitler\u2019s unheralded scrupulousness<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/onpolitics\/2017\/05\/31\/sean-spicer-says-covfefe-wasnt-typo-trump-knew-exactly-what-he-meant\/102355728\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-reactid=\"115\">encrypted brilliance of \u201ccovfefe<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\"118\">One of the most unenthused reviews came from a student who bemoaned the difficulties of keeping any kind of record of Spicer\u2019s lessons, stating, \u201cHe\u2019s incredibly inarticulate, so it was really difficult to take any sort of notes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\"120\">Another noted, \u201cThe entire thing was just a defense of every waking moment he served.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\"122\">Spicer\u2019s sessions aren\u2019t for public consumption, so no transcripts or recordings have been circulated. But according to students HuffPo interviewed, the cushy assignment is mostly filled with with softball queries. \u201cNo questions were pre-screened, but the sessions\u2019 moderators had full control over who was able to get in a question,\u201d the outlet notes. \u201cSpicer, for his part, had his talking points ready\u201d and \u201cregardless of the question&#8230;tended to circle back to a few familiar themes. Benghazi, for instance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\"122\"><span id=\"arPRJgwu\" class=\"ppsISPGbxt\">A key to Spicer\u2019s on-campus discussions is his admission that he\u2019s still in the tank for this lousy administration. He told a student group that his general, overarching plan for the future is to \u201ccontinue to support the Trump agenda.\u201d So it\u2019s unsurprising that the defensiveness and obfuscation that defined his time as press secretary are still obvious in statements students recalled for HuffPo. initiative.<br \/>\nTrump and DeVos&#8217; visit to the West Bloomfield school focused on &#8220;No One Eats Alone&#8221; during lunch time, where Trump told students that, &#8220;it&#8217;s very important that we choose kindness and compassion.&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/theslot.jezebel.com\/woman-married-to-americas-most-hated-bully-ready-to-tak-1819767153\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Many critics<\/a>\u00a0were quick to point out the elephant in the room \u2014 that while it&#8217;s great that the First Lady wants to combat bullying, which is a very real and serious issue, her husband famously uses his Twitter account to bully and intimidate <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/922817539251556353\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">other lawmakers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2017\/sep\/22\/donald-trump-nfl-national-anthem-protests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NFL players<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/920611770775064576\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gold Star families<\/a>.<br \/>\nSo, Melania, please tell have this talk with your husband.<\/p>\n<p><i><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlive.com\/news\/detroit\/index.ssf\/2017\/10\/melania_trump_tells_students_t.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MLive reporter Dana Afana<\/a> was on hand to see the First Lady interact with students and tweeted this photo with the caption, &#8220;@FLOTUS\u00a0tells children it&#8217;s important to treat each other with respect.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Because the internet is the way it is, the students&#8217; and not for good reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Michigan fares the worst among all other states\u00a0when it comes to opportunity and growth available for African American children, according from data compiled by the Annie E. Casey Foundation for its 2017 Race for Results Policy Report.<\/p>\n<p>The study takes into account\u00a0education, health and economic milestones to measure the progress of our youth at the state and national level.<\/p>\n<p>Michigan Radio&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/interlochenpublicradio.org\/post\/african-american-kids-michigan-fare-worse-some-areas-any-other-state#stream\/0\">analysis of the report<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8220;The report shows that African American fourth-graders in Michigan are reading proficient at the lowest rate in the country.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The math proficiency rate for eighth-grade African American kids is tied with Alabama for the lowest in the country.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Michigan League for Public Policy released a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlpp.org\/michigan-policies-must-create-opportunity-and-remove-barriers-for-kids-of-color-immigrants\">statement<\/a> after the report was published.<\/p>\n<p>It read in part:\u00a0<em><strong>\u201cSeeing how our kids in Michigan fare compared to national numbers is startling. We are failing all of our children, especially our kids of color, and we need policies to remove barriers that have created systemic inequities.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the release, CEO of Black Family Development, Inc. Alice Thompson called for a reform in the state&#8217;s policies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichigan is not the best state for meeting the needs of African-American kids,\u201d stated\u00a0Thompson in the news release. \u201cAt a time when racial tensions are running high in our nation, our government and our society are letting these kids down and leaving them behind. \u2018Separate but equal\u2019 was a foolish and flawed policy, but so is \u2018Together but inequitable.\u2019 We need to help all kids move up together, and we\u2019re going to need an overhaul of our policy approach to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The state doesn&#8217;t exactly rank stellar for white children either. But for black South Africans, who account for three-fourths of this nation of roughly 55 million people, political liberation has yet to translate into broad material gains.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-1\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"53\" data-total-count=\"1034\">Apartheid has essentially persisted in economic form.\u00a0 This reality is palpable as turmoil now seizes South Africa. Enraged protesters demand the ouster of President Jacob Zuma over disclosures of corruption so high-level that it is often described as state capture, with private interests having effectively purchased the power to divert state resources in their direction. The economy keels in recession, worsening an official unemployment rate reaching nearly 28 percent.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-5\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"305\" data-total-count=\"1758\">Underlying the anger are deep-seated disparities in wealth. In the aftermath of apartheid, the government left land and other assets largely in the hands of a predominantly white elite. The government\u2019s resistance to large-scale land transfers reflected its reluctance to rattle international investors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"169\" data-total-count=\"1927\">Today, millions of black South Africans are chronically short of capital needed to start businesses. Less than half of the working age population is officially employed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"425\" data-total-count=\"2352\">The governing party, the African National Congress, built empires of new housing for black South Africans, but concentrated it in the townships, reinforcing the geographic strictures of apartheid. Large swaths of the black population remain hunkered down in squalor, on land they do not legally own. Lee Saunders, chair of the AFL-CIO\u2019s political committee and president of AFSCME, and Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, introduced the resolution. They lead the labor federation\u2019s two largest unions. They have filed unfair labor practice (ULP) complaints and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eiaonline.com\/intercepts\/2017\/07\/31\/pickets-greet-weingarten-in-florida\/\">formed informational picket lines<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The two sides finally returned to the bargaining table earlier this month. While some progress was made, it looks like there was some backsliding as well.<\/p>\n<p>The Florida Staff Organization, which is the umbrella group for all employees of the Florida Education Association, filed another complaint with the National Labor Relations Board last week alleging that PCTA officers are engaged in making unilateral changes to the contract, \u201ccoercive actions (surveillance, etc.)\u201d and \u201ccoercive statements (threats, promises of benefits, etc.).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ULPs are often used as a negotiating tactic, but the PCTA staffers have already\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.wixstatic.com\/ugd\/997355_6bf53fbb125249deab51d282b7c1c6b3.pdf\">had one sustained<\/a>. A total of eight priests were implicated in the lawsuit. One of the victims in the settlement is a woman, but the other five are men.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the settlement, abuse survivor advocate Joelle Casteix told\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/new-york\/child-sex-abuse-victims-reach-1-8m-deal-archdioceses-article-1.3588074\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NY Daily News<\/a><\/em>\u00a0that the New York archdiocese&#8217;s leadership has failed to even address the behavior of these abusive priests.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They did nothing to tell parents,&#8221; she asserted. &#8220;And they did nothing to reach out to the survivors for years. Cardinal Dolan should be ashamed of this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Timothy Dolan is the head of the archdiocese of New York, and has been criticized for turning a blind eye to the sexual immorality of some archdiocesan clergy. In 2015 and 2016, Church Militant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchmilitant.com\/news\/article\/complete-coveragenew-york-gay-priest-embezzlement-scandal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">covered the story<\/a> of Fr. Peter Miqueli, an active homosexual priest in the New York archdiocese who embezzled over $1 million from parishes to fund his lavish perversion. Only after national media attention was brought to bear on the scandal did Dolan&#8217;s archdiocese ask that Miqueli step down. He has not been defrocked, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchmilitant.com\/news\/article\/disgraced-priest-shines-light-on-n.y.-corruptions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unlike other clergy<\/a> who committed far less heinous misdeeds.<\/p>\n<p>When Michael Voris interviewed an anonymous source from the archdiocese on camera, the source said that sexual immorality is tolerated and normalized among priests in the archdiocese of New York.<\/p>\n<p>The eight priests implicated in Wednesday&#8217;s settlement were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lohud.com\/story\/news\/religion\/2016\/09\/26\/former-priest-okeefe-removed\/91091894\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Msgr. John O&#8217;Keefe<\/a>, Fr. Herbert D&#8217;Argenio, Msgr. Casper Wolf, <a href=\"http:\/\/noakerlaw.com\/fr-peter-kihm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fr. Peter Kihm<\/a>, Fr.
