For several years I wrote book reviews for the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) monthly publication. The staff sent me free unreadable books along the lines of <i>The History of Concrete<\/i>. So I bought and reviewed books of more interest and importance to the lives of teachers. My reviews were long and contentious&#8211;and a whole lot of fun.<\/p>\n<p>First the editor complained that I was reviewing books he hadn\u2019t sent. Then he complained they were too long. Then he informed me \u201cNo more reviews.\u201d He said book reviews just didn\u2019t meet the needs of teachers.\u00a0 More: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.substancenews.net\/articles.php?page=6744&#038;section=Article\" class=\"autohyperlink\" target=\"_blank\">www.substancenews.net\/articles.php?page=6744&#038;section=Article<\/a><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"kicker\"><span class=\"kicker-label\"><a href=\"https:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/your-money\/loans\/student-loans\/index.html\">STUDENT LOANS<\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n<h1 id=\"headline\" class=\"headline\">Panicked Borrowers, and the Education Department\u2019s Unsettling Silence<\/h1>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"254\" data-total-count=\"254\">It was bad enough late last month when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/03\/30\/business\/student-loan-forgiveness-program-lawsuit.html\">the Education Department<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/03\/30\/business\/student-loan-forgiveness-program-lawsuit.html\">, in a legal filing,<\/a> informed the nation\u2019s public servants that they shouldn\u2019t trust its administrator\u2019s word about whether their <a class=\"meta-classifier\" title=\"More articles about student loans.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/your-money\/loans\/student-loans\/index.html?inline=nyt-classifier\">student loans<\/a> qualify for its debt forgiveness program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"410\" data-total-count=\"664\">But the panic among borrowers that the newfound uncertainty unleashed helps illuminate an additional problem with the public service loan forgiveness program: Many people who believe that they qualify \u2014 and entered graduate school, borrowed piles of money and chose employers accordingly \u2014 may not realize that they are not making qualifying payments or that certain loans are not eligible for forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"390\" data-total-count=\"1054\">The program, which began in 2007, was enacted with what was supposed to be a clear-cut proposition: People who worked for 10 years in public service jobs and made regular payments would have the remainder of their federal student loans forgiven. A wide variety of jobs were supposed to qualify, from nonprofit work to teaching in a public school or practicing medicine at a public hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"354\" data-total-count=\"1408\">But now, 10 years later, the legal filing has sown all manner of confusion \u2014 which itself comes in the wake of a disheartening amount of misdirection given to borrowers. The <a class=\"meta-org\" title=\"More articles about the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/organizations\/c\/consumer_financial_protection_bureau\/index.html?inline=nyt-org\">Consumer Financial Protection Bureau<\/a> receives plenty of complaints about loan servicers offering incorrect information. And well-meaning employers may also pass along bad advice. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/04\/07\/your-money\/student-loans\/panicked-borrowers-and-the-education-departments-unsettling-silence.html?_r=0\" class=\"autohyperlink\" target=\"_blank\">www.nytimes.com\/2017\/04\/07\/your-money\/student-loans\/panicked-borrowers-and-the-education-departments-unsettling-silence.html?_r=0<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"354\" data-total-count=\"1408\"><strong>A Teachers&#8217; Union Against the Teachers&#8211;<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"subtitle entry-title\">Organized Labor and the Crisis at City College of San Francisco<\/h3>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"354\" data-total-count=\"1408\">In the years after the financial crisis of 2008\u201309, educational institutions across the country were starved of <a href=\"http:\/\/californiacommunitycolleges.cccco.edu\/Portals\/0\/KeyFacts\/California_Community_Colleges_Key_Facts_Updated_2-5-14.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">funds<\/a>. From 2007 to 2012, when demand was <a href=\"http:\/\/californiacommunitycolleges.cccco.edu\/Portals\/0\/DocDownloads\/PressReleases\/SEP2012\/PRESS_RELEASE_BOGPROP30_091012_FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">soaring<\/a>, California\u2019s community colleges faced cuts of $1.5 billion, while an estimated \u201c500,000 students were shut out of the system.\u201d<a id=\"fn7\" class=\"endnote-link\" href=\"https:\/\/monthlyreview.org\/2017\/04\/01\/a-teachers-union-against-itself\/#en7\" rel=\"footnote\">7<\/a> However, CCSF Chancellor Don Griffin did not respond to the budget crisis by reducing class offerings and laying-off employees, as might be expected. Griffin and other college administrators instead sought to limit cuts by drawing on the college\u2019s reserves, deferring facilities maintenance, and not replacing administrators who had recently left. As a result, CCSF\u2019s student population dropped by less than 10 percent from 2008 to 2011\u201312, while other urban districts in the state experienced much steeper declines. In Los Angeles, community college enrollment dropped by 15.5 percent, or over 42,000 students. <em><strong>In San Diego, the figure was almost 20 percent. Some people who were \u201ccussing in the church\u201d during the emotionally raw town hall meeting were also escorted out of the House of Prayer Missionary Baptist Church by police, according to media reports.<\/p>\n<p>The police actions angered many in the crowd of about 100 people who argued that when the church opened its doors for government purposes, traditional decorum shouldn\u2019t apply. Our Jewish Synagogues do! Planned Parenthood sure pushes its donors! Again.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>So Long<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Radical Detroit Attorney Marsha Baliff <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Royal Oak\u2019s police chief is criticizing Warren\u2019s mayor after he commented on a fatal house fire in Royal Oak and alleged the woman who lived there was murdered.<\/p>\n<p>The cause of the woman\u2019s death and the fire are still under investigation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have no indication at this point it was a homicide,\u201d Police Chief Corrigan O\u2019Donohue said Tuesday. \u201cBut the investigation is ongoing and we won\u2019t know (definitively) until the investigation is completed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The body of Royal Oak attorney Marsha Baliff, 72, was found in a hallway after a fire destroyed most of her house early March 11 in the 300 block of South Minvera.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailytribune.com\/article\/DT\/20170321\/NEWS\/170329890\" class=\"autohyperlink\" target=\"_blank\">www.dailytribune.com\/article\/DT\/20170321\/NEWS\/170329890<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We Say Fight Back!
