Then we\u2019ll argue about whether there isn\u2019t just as much black-against-white racism in the U.S. as there is white-against-black. (Yes, there is. But, in general, white-against-black economically impacts the future of the black community. Don\u2019t shoot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #2c2c2c;\">Kasey Hansen yelled as she pointed her loaded handgun at a target\u2019s chest at a shooting range outside Salt Lake City.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #2c2c2c;\">\u201cI want to protect my students,\u201d said Hansen, a special needs teacher in Utah. \u201cI\u2019m going to stand in front of a bullet for any student that is in my protection, and so I want another option to defend us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #2c2c2c;\">Hansen carries her pink handgun, Lucy, with her every day to each of the 14 schools in which she teaches. The 26-year-old teacher works with elementary, middle and high school students with hearing impairments in the Granite School District.<\/p>\n<p>She is one of an unknown number of armed teachers across the country. In 28 states, adults who legally own guns will be allowed to carry them in public schools this fall, from kindergarten classrooms to high school hallways. Seven of those states specifically cite teachers and other school staff as being allowed to carry guns in their schools.<\/p>\n<p>A News21 examination of open-records laws in those states found that teachers or staff who choose to carry a firearm into their classrooms are not required to tell principals, other teachers or parents. Only five of those states have completely open access to concealed-carry permit information through public records requests. A state appellate court in June 2013 held that the California Public Records Act allows newspapers to obtain the names of UC police who planned, participated in or witnessed the pepper spraying. Those identities had been redacted from a UC-commissioned report that criticized how campus police and administrators handled the incident&#8230;&#8230; \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The names of two police officers long have been publicly revealed: Pike, who was later fired, and campus police chief Annette Spicuzza, who later resigned.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday evening, the university system released the full, unredacted report of the task force, which identified 18 or so officers who were on the scene or took part in the planning. Most were interviewed for the study.<\/p>\n<p>Besides Pike and Spicuzza, the report and an allied study by Kroll Inc. security consulting firm, focused on four other officers who were said to be at the center of the case.<\/p>\n<p>The reports sharply criticized then-Lt. Barry Swartwood for \u201cabdicating his duties as incident commander\u201d and for failing to lead the operation effectively.\u00a0 Swartwood is no longer a lieutenant but remains on the UC Davis police force as an officer, according to a campus spokesman.<\/p>\n<p>The document also identified the other officer who wielded the pepper spray as Alexander Lee.\u00a0 Lee, who said Pike ordered him to use the chemical, is no longer on the force, according to UC Davis. \u00a0http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/education\/la-me-ln-uc-pepper-spray-20140821-story.html<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"UC Davis Protestors Pepper Sprayed\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6AdDLhPwpp4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Emails obtained by KPCC show Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent John Deasy personally began meeting with Pearson and Apple to discuss the eventual purchase of their products starting nearly a year before the contract went out to public bid. \u00a0<\/strong>Detailed in dozens of emails, the early private talks included everything from prices &#8211; about $160 million over five years &#8211; to tech support.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On behalf of those involved in Pearson Common Core System of Courses, I want you to know how much we are looking forward to our partnership with LAUSD,&#8221; Pearson staffer Sherry King wrote the head of curriculum for L.A. Unified at the time, Jaime Aquino, in November 2012. &#8220;We have begun to work closely with your leadership to help make the transition to the common core smooth for everyone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Emails show Deasy met with CEO of Pearson in May 2012 and later told her it led him to have &#8220;excited&#8221; conversations with his staff upon his return.<\/p>\n<p>After that meeting, Deasy and other high ranking officials exchanged emails about using Pearson as part of its transition to the new Common Core learning standards.<\/p>\n<p>Emails show Deasy also met with Apple officials, in July 2012. \u00a0http:\/\/www.scpr.org\/blogs\/education\/2014\/08\/22\/17193\/internal-emails-show-la-school-officials-started-i\/<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The LA I-Pad Scam Produced by John Deasy of the Fake Degree \u00a0t<\/strong>h<span style=\"color: #666666;\">e groundbreaking effort to provide an iPad to every Los Angeles student, teacher and school administrator was beset by inadequate planning, a lack of transparency and a flawed bidding process, according to a draft of an internal school district report obtained by The Times. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The much-anticipated analysis is drawn from public and closed meetings held over 10 months by a committee chaired by school board member Monica Ratliff. That panel, composed of parents, employee representatives and district officials, heard presentations, posed questions and gathered documents from experts and administrators. Ratliff directed that the report remain confidential until committee members could provide input.<\/p>\n<p>The Times obtained it from sources who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to release it.<\/p>\n<p>The committee review stops short of accusing anyone of wrongdoing, but offers a carefully worded rebuke of the $1-billion-plus technology effort in the nation\u2019s second-largest school system.<\/p>\n<p>The bidding process\u2014and events leading up to it\u2014were singled out for particular criticism. County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas. According to the most recent campaign filings, money spent to elect McKenna totaled about $527,000, while dollars spent on behalf of Johnson added up to more than $1.4 million. \u00a0\u00a0http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/lanow\/la-me-ln-mckenna-school-board-20140822-story.html<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Detroit Teachers to Take ANOTHER 10 percent Pay Cut&#8211;24 more schools closing \u00a0<\/strong>State education officials have approved a plan by Detroit Public Schools to slash pay 10 percent districtwide to help erase the district\u2019s $127 million deficit.<\/p>\n<p>State Superintendent Mike Flanagan announced Wednesday he approved the district\u2019s updated five-year deficit elimination plan for the district to continue receiving state school aid.<\/p>\n<p>The pay cut, which will impact all teachers and administrators starting Oct. 1, came after the district was forced to make budget cuts to offset expected revenue from a failed countywide tax millage. The wage concession for teachers would generate $13.3 million in savings. She seemed uneasy as a photographer scuttled around for the right shot. \u201cI didn\u2019t know this was going to be a whole photo shoot,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>This is only Burningham\u2019s third week at SDEA headquarters after 10 years teaching kindergarteners and first-graders at a Scripps Ranch elementary school. At 34, Burningham is the youngest president SDEA has ever had.<\/p>\n<p>Burningham replaces Bill Freeman, who has gone back to the classroom after serving two consecutive two-year terms \u2013 the max for an SDEA president.<\/p>\n<p>Burningham started as a union representative at her elementary school, and then worked her way up the leadership ranks: She was elected board member, then secretary. In 2012, she was elected vice president, beating out former president and polarizing activist <a href=\"http:\/\/voiceofsandiego.org\/2012\/03\/20\/controversial-teachers-union-leader-zombro-voted-out\/\">Camille Zombro<\/a> by more than 100 votes.<\/p>\n<p>And earlier this year, Burningham beat out <a href=\"http:\/\/thebreakfastclubsandiego.wordpress.com\/2014\/03\/25\/the-elevator-pitch\/\">Shane Parmely<\/a>, who also represents a more aggressive faction of SDEA. The union\u2019s choice of Burningham over Parmely for president meant it\u2019d be staying the more moderate, Freeman-esque course. \u00a0http:\/\/voiceofsandiego.org\/2014\/08\/21\/a-new-face-and-old-battle-lines-for-local-schools\/<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Near-by Ferguson School Boss Seeks to Silence Discussion about racism and resistance\u00a0<\/strong>In many ways, the recent chaos in Ferguson is perfect fodder for high school discussions about the judicial system, civil disobedience, racial divides and the role of media.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">But in the Edwardsville School District, teachers in the middle and high schools have been told by principals to \u201cchange the subject and refocus the students\u201d whenever Ferguson comes up.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">The directives have upset some parents who say the events following the police officer shooting of Michael Brown present a wealth of teaching opportunities for their children, many of whom have been watching the situation unfold on television. What we\u2019re seeing here is a gaggle of cops wearing more elite killing gear than your average squad leader leading a foot patrol through the most hostile sands or hills of\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"mandelbrot_refrag\" style=\"font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: #1d1d1d;\"><a class=\"mandelbrot_refrag\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thenation.com\/afghanistan?lc=int_mb_1001\" data-ls-seen=\"1\">Afghanistan<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: #1d1d1d;\">. They are equipped with Kevlar helmets, assault-friendly gas masks, combat gloves and knee pads (all four of them), woodland Marine Pattern utility trousers, tactical body armor vests, about 120 to 180 rounds for each shooter, semiautomatic pistols attached to their thighs, disposable handcuff restraints hanging from their vests, close-quarter-battle receivers for their M4 carbine rifles and Advanced Combat Optical Gunsights. In other words, they\u2019re itching for a fight. A big one. It\u2019s a well-known horror that the US military greets foreign peoples in this fashion as our politicians preach freedom, democracy and peace. It\u2019s an abomination that the police greet black communities in the States with the same trigger-happy posture. Especially on the occasion of an unarmed teen\u2019s death by cop.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"views-field-value byline\" style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; color: #526a83;\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: #1d1d1d;\">There\u2019s at least one line every Marine knows. It\u2019s ingrained at boot camp or Officer Candidate School and follows us to the front lines and back home again. It\u2019s a simple command and it\u2019s the second of the four weapons-safety rules. For what it\u2019s worth, such smokescreens are usually executed during flanking attacks, retreats, close air support missions or casualty evacuations. All of these situations are presumed to take place under real or potential conditions of heavy enemy fire. Make of this what you will. Then again, it is allowed for domestic riot control, and nations like Turkey, Bahrain, Israel and the United States have exploited the loophole to great avail. If you\u2019re interested in the weapon\u2019s mechanics or science, the Internet\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #526a83;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.defense-technology.com\/pdfs\/specs\/Triple%20Chaser.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-ls-seen=\"1\">has<\/a><span style=\"color: #1d1d1d;\">\u00a0your back. In the meantime, I can assure you its effects are far from pleasurable. Corporate-attuned Black powerbrokers and politicians deliver essentially the same message, counseling (quiet) introspection and a search for \u201csolutions\u201d (diversions) to the historical oppression in which they are deeply complicit.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 300; color: #2e2e2e;\">But first, tensions must be reduced, to diffuse the confrontation \u2013 which, we are told, serves no one\u2019s interests but the \u201cagitators and instigators\u201d (who, apparently, have millions of dollars in derivatives wagers riding on urban chaos). Fortunately, the \u201cstreet\u201d ignores the misleaders. If Ferguson had remained \u201ccalm\u201d in the face of Michael Brown\u2019s murder, nobody outside greater St. Louis would know the place existed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 300; color: #2e2e2e;\">De-militarize the police? After 50 years of seamlessly integrating the local constabulary into the National Security State and its War on Drugs, War on Terror, myriad and unending foreign wars, and of funneling millions of Black prisoners into the world\u2019s largest system of incarceration, where would the process of demilitarization begin? What, exactly, does it mean to be militarized? Is it defined by the equipment the troops\/cops carry? Or, by the mission they are assigned?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 300; color: #2e2e2e;\">If the mission of police forces in the United States is to contain, suppress, hyper-surveil and incarcerate huge numbers of Black people as a matter of policy, then police departments require all the tools the federal government has been giving them since President Lyndon Johnson signed the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 \u2013 a cornerstone in the construction of a truly national, integrated gendarmerie, which is defined as \u201ca military force charged with police duties among civilian populations.\u201d SWAT teams, first formed in Philadelphia in 1964 and Los Angeles in 1967 as unabashed counter-Black insurgency units, have proliferated to the far corners of the land, and are now standard drill for warrant-serving cops. The domestic counterinsurgency army has been methodically expanded by each successive administration, first through the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration, and ultimately drawing on the stocks of, not only the Pentagon, but virtually every armed agency of the federal government.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 300; color: #2e2e2e;\">President Obama, to whom idiots appeal to scale back police militarization, is as hawkish as any of his predecessors in about keeping America safe from Black inner city insurgency. The lead sentence in an item in today\u2019s\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: 300; color: #b9400e;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/08\/20\/upshot\/data-on-transfer-of-military-gear-to-police-departments.html?ref=us&amp;abt=0002&amp;abg=0\" target=\"_blank\">New York Times,<\/a>\u00a0blandly titled \u201cData on Transfer of Military Gear to Police Depatments,\u201d tells the tale, succinctly:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 300; color: #2e2e2e;\">\u201cSince President Obama took office, the Pentagon has transferred to police departments tens of thousands of machine guns; nearly 200,000 ammunition magazines; thousands of pieces of camouflage and night-vision equipment; and hundreds of silencers, armored cars and aircraft.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 300; color: #2e2e2e;\">Clearly, the U.S. is at war with Black America. \u00a0http:\/\/blackagendareport.com\/node\/14372<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 300; color: #2e2e2e;\"><strong>Copper: &#8220;Don&#8217;t Want to get hurt?
