Rouge Forum Update: Special Einstein and Zapata Edition!

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

April 11 Einstein Releases Theory of Relativity (1905): Einstein on Why Socialism? “The individual has become more conscious than ever of his dependence upon society. But he does not experience this dependence as a positive asset, as an organic tie, as a protective force, but rather as a threat to his natural rights, or even to his economic existence. Moreover, his position in society is such that the egotistical drives of his make-up are constantly being accentuated, while his social drives, which are by nature weaker, progressively deteriorate. All human beings, whatever their position in society, are suffering from this process of deterioration. Unknowingly prisoners of their own egotism, they feel insecure, lonely, and deprived of the naive, simple, and unsophisticated enjoyment of life. Man can find meaning in life, short and perilous as it is, only through devoting himself to society. The economic anarchy of capitalist society as it exists today is, in my opinion, the real source of the evil. ” monthlyreview.org/598einstein.php

AFT Sells Out DC Teachers in Innovative Ways: Accepts Merit Pay, Waltons and Broad’s Buy the Teachers, Phony Raise Included: “The private funding sources for the contract are expected to draw scrutiny from teachers and council members. The proposed pay package would be financed with grants from four private donors: the Eli and Edythe Broad, Laura and John Arnold, Robertson and Walton Family foundations….The pay package covers five years, with base salary increases of 3, 3, 5, 4 and 5 percent. If the council ratifies the deal, the first 11 percent will be paid retroactively to the District’s 3,800 teachers, who have not had a raise in nearly three years. The other major piece of the deal would allow officials more freedom in deciding whether to retain teachers who are “excessed” when schools are closed because of budget or enrollment issues. Under the proposal, teachers would be cut according to a formula that gives greatest weight to the previous year’s evaluation. Seniority would receive least weight.”

Opportunism, Sectarianism, Education, Ravitch, Education and Change:” What is Ravitch defending? Methods to buttress capitalism. The rest is details. She is still a propagandist for witless patriotism; the vile notion that we should ally with our nation’s ruling class as they make war on us and others. It’s suicide through class unity.” richgibson.com/opportunismravitch.html

Zionists Move to Take Over Berkeley Student Government: “How are we going to beat back the anti-Israel divestment resolution at Berkeley? We’re going to make certain that pro-Israel students take over the student government and reverse the vote. That is how AIPAC operates in our nation’s capitol. This is how AIPAC must operate on our nation’s campuses.”

California Universities Steal Student Fees for Secret Projects: “California universities have faced round after round of crippling budget cuts and protests against increased fees have flared on campuses, administrators have tapped funds meant for classrooms and students to cover some extraordinary costs: losses on ill-timed real estate deals, loans to high-ranking officials and an ambitious construction project.”

More Fraud In Detroit Public School Contracts: “In the summer of 2005, Detroit businesswoman Sherry Washington and three partners sold Detroit Public Schools on a pilot wellness program for its employees. Their company, Associates for Learning, promised to educate roughly 3,000 employees on the benefits of a healthy lifestyle for $150,000.By 2006, payments to Associates for Learning had ballooned to $3.32 million, DPS alleges in a lawsuit. And yet fewer than 150 workers had taken part…The district’s claims against Associates for Learning are part of a larger lawsuit that alleges the former DPS director of risk management, Stephen Hill, and his assistant, Christina Polk-Osumah, diverted more than $57 million in improper wire transfers to a dozen vendors, including Associates for Learning. The suit claims Hill used secret offices and computer systems to hide the payments, which were made to vendors who were friends, associates or relatives of Hill and Polk-Osumah.” www.freep.com/article/20100411/NEWS01/4110512/1319/Lawsuit-Embattled-DPS-contractor-spent-lavishly

And he might mean both of them.”

So Long UAW; It Was Not So Good to Know Ya:
“membership fell by 18 percent from 2008 to 2009, with current membership at 355,191 men and women. The job losses came courtesy of several plant closings around the country as domestic automakers struggled to right-size a footprint that was too big to sustain. And the UAW isn’t just losing people, the labor organization is also losing cash and political influence. The UAW lost a total of $69 million in assets in 2009, as cash reserves are now down to $1.12 billion. The UAW is spending less money in Washington as well, as the rank and file spent $9.7 million on lobbying efforts in 2009, down from $10.6 million in 2008. Even long-time union boss Ron Gettelfinger took a bit of a haircut in 2009 as his pay was cut by $1,000 to $173,069.  (The UAW lost another 45oo members when the last auto plant in California closed in April ‘10. Today the largest UAW local is not auto workers, but Michigan State Employees, sold out as usual by Quisling mis-leaders.)

Of 114,000 active union members, about 27,500 voted. That participation rate of 24 percent is an increase from 22 percent three years ago, but still down from 29 percent in 2004. On the Ooops there Goes the Economy Front:

Urgent Financial Crises in Detroit and LA (looks like evil twins wrote these assessments);
LA: “ The city’s top financial official issued a grim assessment of the escalating budget crisis Monday, warning that Los Angeles could be unable to pay its bills in just over four weeks.
City Controller Wendy Greuel declared an “urgent financial crisis” and said the only way to continue paying bills in the short term was to begin to drain the city’s already limited emergency reserve.

And Detroit: “The city’s dramatic population loss, high unemployment and other ills have had adverse effects on the city. And now government must respond in a dramatic way to downsize and make sound budget choices, the report argues.”

GM and Chrysler Pension Funds Underfunded by $17 Billion (guess who gets the tab?): “If either company’s plan must be terminated, the government would become liable for paying benefits to hundreds of thousands of retirees. The effect on the government’s pension insurer, the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation, would be “unprecedented,” the report said. The agency manages plans with assets totaling $68.7 billion, less than the $84.5 billion in G.M.’s plan alone…The plans cover about 650,000 people at G.M. and 250,000 at Chrysler. The Treasury Department owns 61 percent of G.M. and 10 percent of Chrysler as a result of the emergency loans the carmakers received last year. The government spent $81 billion bailing out the companies and others in the auto industry.

Inverse Merit Pay: Mr Prince can You Explain the $12.5 Million, Please?:
“In 2007, Mr. Prince resigned from Citigroup under pressure, after the bank announced that it had written down $5.9 billion to account for the declining value of its mortgage assets and would most likely write down $8 billion to $11 billion more. (Boy, was that estimate off; those write-downs actually added up to tens of billions.) As a thank-you present for running the bank into the ground, the board gave Mr. Prince a parting gift valued at $12.5 million.

Domhoff’s Update on Who Rules America:
“In the United States, wealth is highly concentrated in a relatively few hands. As of 2007, the top 1% of households (the upper class) owned 34.6% of all privately held wealth, and the next 19% (the managerial, professional, and small business stratum) had 50.5%, which means that just 20% of the people owned a remarkable 85%, leaving only 15% of the wealth for the bottom 80% (wage and salary workers). In terms of financial wealth (total net worth minus the value of one’s home), the top 1% of households had an even greater share: 42.7%. A Worker Reads History:

Who built the seven gates of Thebes?
The books are filled with names of kings.
Was it the kings who hauled the craggy blocks of stone?
And Babylon, so many times destroyed.
Who built the city up each time? In which of Lima’s houses,
That city glittering with gold, lived those who built it?
In the evening when the Chinese wall was finished
Where did the masons go? Imperial Rome
Is full of arcs of triumph. Who reared them up? Over whom
Did the Caesars triumph? Byzantium lives in song.
Were all her dwellings palaces? And even in Atlantis of the legend
The night the seas rushed in,
The drowning men still bellowed for their slaves.

Young Alexander conquered India.
He alone?
Caesar beat the Gauls.
Was there not even a cook in his army?
Phillip of Spain wept as his fleet
was sunk and destroyed. Were there no other tears?
Frederick the Greek triumphed in the Seven Years War.
Who triumphed with him?

Each page a victory
At whose expense the victory ball?
Every ten years a great man,
Who paid the piper?

So many particulars.
So many questions.

For Zapatat: Recuerdo:

Little star in the night
that rides the sky like a witch
where is our chief Zapata
who was the scourge of the rich?

Little flower of the fields
and valleys of Morelos,
if they ask for Zapata,
say he’s gone to try on halos.

Little bubbling brook,
what did that carnation say to you?
It says our chief didn’t die.
that Zapata’s on his way to you.
