Why Are things as they are? People make their own histories, but not in circumstances they chose.
“History leaves grievances around like land mines.” Marx.

March 26, 1931: Ho Chi Minh and a handful of others began to organize to fight French imperialism.

We are coming to the 40th anniversary of the victory of the people of Vietnam over the US forces (April 29-May 1, 1975) as well as the 70th anniversary of WWII in Europe (April 29-May 1, 1945).  How will these histories be taught? Why?

March 26: 1997 Heavens Gate: 39 dead religious fanatics dead in San Diego.

March 27: 1836 – Texas Revolution: Goliad massacre – On the orders of General Antonio López de Santa Anna, the Mexican army butchers 342 Texas POWs at Goliad, Texas.
March 27: 1851 – First reported sighting of the Yosemite Valley by Europeans.
March 27: 1886 – Famous Apache warrior, Geronimo, surrenders to the U.S. Army, ending the main phase of the Apache Wars.
“ 1990: – The United States begins broadcasting TV Martí, an anti-Castro propaganda network, to Cuba.

4. To create a rearview mirror, and foreshadow our coming historical inquiry, what is the social context in Mexico today, and where might we look besides the links on the syllabus?
