Labor Notes October 2006

PARTY CENTRAL SEIU:

It may be a rough time for the labor movement, but SEIU Local 1199 still manages to have some fun. According to the New York Daily News, 1199 spent more than $2 million last year on parties and union getaways. Among these: the annual delegates holiday party, costing nearly $500,000, a $9,247 dinner for 50 union reps, part of 1199's successful attempt to persuade a Maryland nurses’ union to merge with it, and a $465,000 planning retreat in ew York’s Adirondack Mountains for 700 1199 staffers. Said 1199 President, Dennis Rivera, “It is a way to thank our activists who sacrificed and give their time to build the union. What price do you put on that?”
